From Law to Action: Supporting the Search for Lebanon’s Missing and Forcibly Disappeared

The National Commission for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared (NCMFD) participated in a roundtable on advancing the search for missing and forcibly disappeared persons in Lebanon, highlighting the importance of access to information, adequate resources, and coordinated efforts to implement Law No. 105/2018 and uphold families’ right to know.

The roundtable, entitled “Missing and Forcibly Disappeared Persons in Lebanon: From Law to Implementation and Supporting the Work of the National Commission,” was organised by Forum for Memory and Future (FMF) in cooperation with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies.

Discussions addressed progress in tackling the issue of missing and forcibly disappeared persons, the Commission’s priorities and needs, and the challenges affecting the implementation of its mandate. Participants also considered practical measures to support the implementation of Law No. 105/2018 and strengthen coordination between the Commission and relevant stakeholders.

In his remarks, the Commission’s President stressed the importance of public authorities, political actors, institutions, and individuals providing the Commission with any information in their possession that may contribute to the search for missing and forcibly disappeared persons and the clarification of their fate.

He also underscored the need to provide the Commission with the necessary resources and support and to bring together the efforts of public authorities, families, civil society, and other partners in support of the Commission’s mandate and families’ right to know the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones.
