Key Milestones of the Commission
Following the constitution of the National Commission for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared under Decree No. 6570/2020, the Commission's first mandate began, together with the development of its institutional, regulatory and operational foundations.
During its first mandate, the Commission worked to establish its institutional foundations, develop the frameworks and regulations required to implement its mandate, and build cooperation and partnerships with relevant national and international actors.
In July 2025, the members of the Commission were appointed for a second mandate, marking a new phase aimed at strengthening its operational capacity, advancing the implementation of Law No. 105/2018, and building on the work undertaken during its first mandate.
The Commission continued to develop its institutional and operational structure and strengthen its capacities in the core areas of its mandate, including data management, inquiry and investigation, human remains management and identification, and engagement with families of the missing, while further strengthening governance, data protection and confidentiality frameworks.
The Commission adopted the Integrated Data Management System (iDMS) and began receiving data and information from relevant entities as part of the development of a secure and centralized national system for managing information relating to missing persons and their families.
The Commission continued working towards an integrated national approach to human remains management and humanitarian identification, while strengthening coordination with competent national institutions and relevant partners.
The Commission strengthened its cooperation with national institutions, international organizations, civil society organizations and other partners in support of the implementation of its mandate and the development of its institutional and technical capacities.
